Mark Lawler, Associate Director of Postgraduate Studies, Chair in Translational Cancer Genomics, and Professor of Digital Health at Queen’s University Belfast, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The newly launched North South Research Programme: Insights on Impact report by Higher Education Authority and AIREN – All-Island Research Excellence Network showcases the significant impact that investment in all-island research collaboration is achieving across Ireland and Northern Ireland and is to be applauded.
The North South Research Programme (NSRP), supported through the Government’s Shared Island initiative, has invested €55.6 million to date in collaborative research projects across the island of Ireland.
We are proud that the AICRI start programme, supported through a €4 million investment under the NSRP, is highlighted in the report as a strong exemplarample of the programme’s impact. AICRI start laid the foundation for the All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI) and continues to strengthen cancer research collaboration and deliver impact while supporting the next generation of researchers across the island of Ireland.
AICRI start has trained 20 early-career cancer researchers, including 10 PhD students and 10 postdoctoral researchers, across 10 institutions throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland, helping to building a connected all-island cancer research community focused on oncology and precision medicine and improving patient outcomes.
The report highlights how AICRIstart has:
- Strengthened collaboration between institutions across the island.
- Supported the development of emerging cancer researchers.
- Enabled international engagement and partnerships.
- Built momentum for the wider All-Island Cancer Research Institute.
I was delighted to participate in the webinar that accompanied the launch and highlighted some of the impacts that we have already achieved, locally and globally.
Locally, our Innovation Boot Camp, where we match students and fellows from different institutions and provide funding for the winners to realise their innovation idea, has led to creation of a patient-centred lung cancer booklet ‘Navigating Lung Cancer‘ which is greatly valued by the patient community.
Globally, AICRI start’s leadership in bringing the inaugural the Euro-American Forum for Cancer to Ireland, convened 100 world leaders in cancer research innovation and care at Farmleigh House, Dublin, a historic event that showed AICRIStart’s convening power and influence on the world stage. Rightly dubbed ‘the Davos of Cancer’ this was a premier event that showcased the island of Ireland to the world

For All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI), AICRIstart represents a powerful example of what can be achieved when we work together with a shared ambition to improve cancer research and care for patients across the island. But continued investment to allow us to scale this programme is key. As I said at the end of the webinar to launch the report
‘The impact of AICRI has been felt both locally and globally. Success breeds Success; Invest in Success. We deliver.’
