Mark Lawler: Speaking at the 10th Plenary of the North/South Inter-Parliamentary Association

Mark Lawler, Chair in Translational Cancer Genomics and the Associate Director of Postgraduate Studies at Queen’s University Belfast, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Delighted to speak in Parliament Buildings in Stormont at the 10th Plenary of the North/South Inter-Parliamentary Association on the topic of Cross-Border Cancer Research and Care.

Great opportunity to highlight a number of key issues where there has been significant progress and what needs to be to maximise joint cancer research and cancer care approaches to yield both health and socio-economic benefit for the island of Ireland.

Introduced the principle that Cancer Has No Borders – So Neither Should We.

Highlighted how the Northern Ireland US National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium has delivered significant benefit for cancer research and care

Showed how the bottom up approach by the All-Island Cancer Research Institute is driving cancer research and innovation island-wide. Collaboration is the key. We need to compete, not against each other, but against our common enemy – Cancer

Emphasised that the encompass digital transformation programme is a ‘Thomas Edison’ moment for health and innovation in Northern Ireland

Highlighted the need to address the financial discrimination that cancer survivors face, and how to address it by introducing a Right To Be Forgotten whereby cancer survivors 5 YEARS post successful treatment are protected from financial discrimination by law.

Super feedback from MLAs and TDs on the session – great engagement during the session and lots of discussion at lunch afterwards and lots of support.”
