Mark Lawler: The Hidden Impact of Cancer on Patients and Their Caregivers

Mark Lawler, Chair in Translational Cancer Genomics and the Associate Director of Postgraduate Studies at Queen’s University Belfast, shared a post on LinkedIn by Queen’s University Belfast, adding:

“Shortlisted for the Irish HealthCare awards this evening in the cross-border/international category, for our Right To Be Forgotten Campaign to end financial discrimination against cancer survivors. How can it be in 2025 that cancer survivors are financially discriminated against, in access to mortgages, insurance products etc?

The Right To Be Forgotten needs to be embedded into law so that cancer survivors are protected. This is not about compassion; it is about the evidence and acting on the evidence that we have generated that shows how we are discriminating against people who are cured of their cancer. We’ve got this far – based on our evidence the Minister for Finance has said he will do it – Let’s get this over the line”

Quoting Queen’s University Belfast‘s post:

“What is the hidden impact of cancer on patients and their caregivers?

From financial inequalities for survivors to the need to transform supportive care, our researchers are working to expose the challenges faced and find solutions to improve the lives of those diagnosed and the people who care for them.

Tune in now to our roundtable discussion.”
