Mark Baxter, Clinical Senior Lecturer at University of Dundee, shared on LinkedIn:
“It was great to get together again as a UK group at SIOG 2026 in Valencia, review progress and plan for the year ahead.
Lots of Geriatric Oncology service development and expansion continuing to happen across the UK as teams look to implement frailty screening and intervention.
Importantly, there is variation in how this is being done – highlighting that one model of service delivery doesn’t fit all.
It is important teams pick what works for them.
Funding and sustainability remain the biggest challenges.
Looking ahead to 2027, we hope to host the first UK Geriatric Oncology meeting in collaboration with British Geriatrics Society – Monday 19th April 2027 (likely in Birmingham) as well as our annual session at the UK Oncology Forum, which will hopefully include an interactive workshop on how to perform various frailty assessments.
We will also continue working on several manuscripts and other educational projects in the background following on from the publication of the 2026 Frailty Assessment Toolkit in collaboration with Pfizer.
Finally thank you to Prof Kwok-Leung Cheung for his excellent leadership over many years – he moves on today to take over as SIOG President!
Big shoes to fill!”
