Mariam Salami: Do Not Ignore Unusual Breast Changes Simply Because They Are Painless

Mariam Salami, Breast Cancer Survivor, Founder of Mariam-Atswandeh Cancer Support Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The scariest part? It never hurt.

Before my breast cancer diagnosis, I kept expecting pain because I thought that was how breast cancer would announce itself.
But there was no pain.

What I noticed were changes that could easily have been overlooked. My breasts did not look the same, and deep within me, I knew something was not right.

One important lesson from my experience is that breast cancer does not always cause pain, especially in its early stages.

Changes such as a painless lump, a change in the size or shape of the breast, skin dimpling, nipple changes, or unusual discharge should not be ignored simply because they are painless.

As a breast cancer survivor and patient advocate, I continue to share my experience because many people are still waiting for pain before seeking medical attention.

Please know your body. Pay attention to persistent or unusual changes. Ask questions and seek medical evaluation when something does not feel right.

Do not wait for pain before you pay attention. Early detection can improve outcomes and save lives.”
