María Natalia Gandur Quiroga, Chief of the Division of Genitourinary Medical Oncology at the Angel H. Roffo Oncology Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Kidney cancer disparities among American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
Findings presented by La Rosa et al. reveal alarming gaps:
- Incidence ~90% higher vs. non-Hispanic Whites
- Mortality nearly doubled
- Faster annual increase in cases (2.8%/yr vs 1.1%)
- Later-stage diagnoses & lower access to surgery/systemic therapy
- Disparities driven by late detection, environmental exposures, limited access, and higher rates of CKD, HTN, obesity & tobacco use
- Solutions require community-led, culturally grounded, multi-level action
A reminder that equity in Kidney Cancer demands sustained investment, modernized IHS care, tele-oncology expansion, and prevention tailored to tribal nations.”
