Manoj Reddy: Protecting Muscle Mass and Independence in Aging and Cancer Care

Manoj Reddy, Founder and Director at Integrative Oncology Working Group, shared on LinkedIn:

“Sarcopenia affects an estimated 10 – 27% of adults aged 60 and older. How often are we recognizing muscle loss before it threatens our patients’ independence? (Petermann – Rocha et al. 2022)

Getting out of a chair. Climbing stairs. Carrying groceries. Continuing to live independently.

These everyday abilities give meaning to healthspan and impact longevity. Muscle weakness and slow walking speed are associated with mobility limitations, falls, and mortality. (Cawthorn et al 2020)

For people living with and beyond cancer, preserving muscle deserves a place in the survivorship conversation. As an example, in a study of 3,241 women with stage II – III breast cancer, 34% had low muscle mass on CT at diagnosis, classified as sarcopenia in that study. It was associated with poorer overall survival. (Caan et al 2018)

How can we recognize the problem earlier, and translate exercise and nutrition evidence into practice?

Join the Integrative Oncology Working Group for its October Grand Rounds: Resistance Exercise and Protein to Preserve Muscle in Aging, Implications for Aging and Cancer Survivorship.

Featuring:

  • Giulia Coletta: Resistance exercise to counter sarcopenia, including evidence from community and remotely delivered strength – training programs.
  • James McKendry: Protein strategies to counter anabolic resistance in aging, illness, and disuse.
