Maida Harris Mangiameli, Small Cell Lung Cancer Survivor, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Seven years ago, I was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. Today, I’m alive – and sometimes that comes with a heavy weight.
Survivor’s guilt is rarely discussed, but it’s real. Wondering ‘why me?’ when statistics suggest otherwise. The guilt can accompany gratitude.
If you’re a cancer survivor carrying this weight, you are not alone. And you should still celebrate your survivor milestones. If the feeling becomes overwhelming at times, speak to someone… family member, a close friend, someone in your cancer community, or a therapist.
I’m grateful to be in remission, and I try not to let my survivor’s guilt become all consuming.”
