“Who counts as a lung cancer expert?
Expertise comes from different places.
Clinicians bring medical knowledge. Researchers bring scientific knowledge. People with lived experience bring knowledge from living with lung cancer and using healthcare services.
Some lung cancer advocates also develop specialist knowledge. This can include research, clinical trials, policy, access to treatment and support.
This knowledge can have a direct role in the work.
People with lived experience can contribute to research, clinical trial design, treatment assessment and policy.
In Europe, this role is also recognised in policy. Under the EU Health Technology Assessment Regulation, patients and carers can contribute as individual experts to European assessments of new treatments.
Advocacy is not just about telling your story.
People with lived experience can bring knowledge and experience into discussions while decisions are still being made.
At Lung Cancer Europe, we want people with lived experience to be partners in science and innovation.
Lung cancer needs different kinds of expertise. Lived experience is one of them.
