“Hello, I’m Émilie, I’m 36 and French. I became really unwell in April, and for a long time, no one could work out what was going on. Because of my age, lung cancer wasn’t even considered.
When I finally found out it was lung cancer, it was through a message on my online health portal. Hours later, someone came to speak to me and had to repeat it again and again because it just wouldn’t sink in.
Telling the people I love felt like ringing around after a bereavement. It was one of the hardest parts.
In July 2025, I was diagnosed with stage 4 ALK+ metastatic lung cancer. I’m now on targeted therapy, and my tumour has already shrunk by more than 50%. The bone lesions I had have gone.
I’ve always been an epicurean – I love good food, travel, being outdoors, and simple moments with my family, friends, and my dog. That hasn’t changed. Breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, walking, and gentler sports keep me steady. My mum helped me with everything when I was too unwell, and having people around me – family, friends, healthcare teams, support groups – has meant everything.
Some days are harder than others, but routines help. Meals are medicine. Exercise is medicine. Talking about it is important too.
Thank you, Émilie, for speaking so openly about what this has been like for you.”
