Luigi Stanco: Half the Global Population Receives Less Than 1% of Morphine Worldwide

Luigi Stanco, Palliative Medicine Senior Physician at Hôpital du Valais, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Don’t worry, your eyesight is fine, you’re just looking at the global map of morphine and opioid distribution.

Of the 298·5 million metric tonnes of morphine-equivalent opioids distributed in the world each year, only 0·1 metric tonnes are distributed to low-income countries, and 50% of the global population receive less than 1% of the morphine distributed worldwide.”

Eduardo Bruera, Medical Doctor at MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared this post adding:

“The cancer pain opioid crisis is related to lack of availability plus barriers to prescription and dispensation where available.”
