Lola Manterola: Only Through Collaboration Will We Achieve a World Without Cancer

Lola Manterola, President of CRIS Cancer Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’ve been in a suitcase for 15 years, answering emails and calls on the way to the airport. Since we started CRIS Cancer Foundation, this is my life.

In 2008 when I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and given 4 months to live, I traveled many places, even countries, in search of a cure, only to realize that I had it at my doorstep at home in a clinical trial at the Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid.

Advanced research in the Spanish public health system saved my life, yes, but the reality is that I still live with cancer.

You have to be calm‘ is probably the phrase I’ve heard the most in the last decade, but when you’re fortunate enough to represent an organization based in Spain, the United Kingdom and France that has also funded lines of research in 87 countries, staying at home is not an option.

The truth is that I am restless by nature and moving gives me life, but in addition, over time I have discovered that research is exactly the same.

Cancer is not a problem of a region, nor of a country, it is a global problem that needs global solutions, which is why collaboration and the creation of networks of scientific knowledge is the DNA of CRIS contra el Cáncer. Our scientists do research and we work to share this knowledge as the only way to multiply results that benefit us all.

At CRIS Cancer Foundation we take the suitcase of research wherever it is needed and it has borne many fruits.

Since 2010 we have achieved 89 new treatments developed by CRIS teams, generating direct benefits for 12,412 patients in clinical trials and we can only go further and better.

So I have many hours left at the airport because if there is one thing that is clear to me, it is that only through collaboration will we achieve a world without cancer.”
