“My friends,
A peak was conquered. But the battle continues. Every child with cancer should have the opportunity to be cured.
The ascent to Mount Olympus, the mythical mountain of Greece, was a difficult and painful test.
Mission completed. The goal was achieved.
Every step, every uphill, every moment of fatigue had a deeper purpose.
We went up thinking about the children and adolescents with cancer and their families, who are fighting much more difficult battles every day.
Our message is clear:
With strength, perseverance, international partnerships, dedication to science, love and hope, we can offer more and more children the cure for cancer.
At the same time, we are sending a message beyond the borders of Cyprus:
Our country, small in size but great in contribution, deservedly takes care of its own children with cancer and at the same time works so that every child, wherever they were born and wherever they live, has the right to treatment that can offer them healing and life.
Cyprus is gradually emerging as an international hub for the supply of medicines, know-how and training of health professionals, especially in countries where shortages are great and the chances of curing children remain very low.
I thank from the bottom of my heart my excellent teammates, who shared with me this difficult but so important mission: Elena Lena, Elina Ioannou, Andreas Antoniou and Savvas Adamou.
We undertook this challenging ascent under the guidance of our excellent and highly experienced mountain guide from Elassona, Dimitris Lanaris, to whom we are deeply grateful. I also warmly thank the ELPIDA Foundation (means hope in Greek) and everyone who continues to support our efforts.
The mythical Olympus was for us the symbolic peak of victory.
But the real victory will be a world where no child with cancer will be deprived of the opportunity for a cure.
