Loizos G. Loizou, Head of Cyprus International Action Plan for Children with Cancer at ELPIDA Foundation for Children with Cancer, shared on LinkedIn:
“My friends,
Cyprus: Small country, offer beyond borders.
Cyprus highlights a unique example of international contribution: A small country can turn its knowledge and experience into meaningful help for children with cancer in other countries.
Cyprus: An example of global importance.
Our journey began from a national need: To offer the best possible treatment to children with cancer in Cyprus, to support their families and to investigate the causes of cancer in children and adolescents.
The creation of the PORCY Child Cancer Population Registry and the scientific analysis of the data have produced new knowledge and a solid basis for investigating these questions, future research and informed decisions.
Today, this knowledge and experience are becoming more valuable.
Through the Cyprus International Action Plan for Children with Cancer, we develop a specific offer beyond our borders: Support the treatment of children with cancer through:
- cancer drug donations
- supportive treatment,
- humanitarian missions,
- vaccine donation,
- training of professionals
- scholarships,
- information and prevention,
- partnerships to create and strengthen cancer records.
First, we built alliances with governmental and non-governmental actors, developing an exemplary model of cooperation between the two sectors.
The excellent cooperation with the Cypriot Government and its valuable support over the last three years have contributed decisively to this effort.
Together with the medical community, the business world and the ELPIDA Foundation, and through international alliances and partnerships, we as Cyprus contribute to the global effort to ensure that every child with cancer, wherever they live, has access to the treatment and care that give them the best possible chance of beating the disease.
Our goal is for more children to have access to the treatment and care they need, regardless of their place of birth.
Cyprus shows that the size of a country does not determine the size of its supply.
With knowledge, cooperation and continuity, a small country can offer hope far beyond its borders.”
