Liquid Biopsy and Cancer: What’s Good to Know.
Problem:
- Cancer diagnosis and monitoring often require a tissue biopsy, an invasive procedure that is not always easy and cannot be repeated frequently.
Solution:
- Liquid biopsy is a simple test, usually of blood, that can detect material coming from the tumor, mainly circulating cancer DNA (ctDNA) and specific molecular lesions. It can help with the molecular characterization of cancer, the selection of certain targeted therapies, and the monitoring of treatment response or disease progression.
Benefit:
- With a simple blood sample, which can be repeated, we have the ability, in appropriately selected cases, to gain valuable information about cancer and its changes over time.
Important:
- Liquid biopsy does not generally replace tissue biopsy, and its use for screening and early diagnosis of cancer is still under evaluation.”
