Loizos G. Loizou: A New Era in Holistic Care for Children with Cancer in Cyprus

Loizos G. Loizou, Head of Cyprus International Action Plan for Children with Cancer at ELPIDA Foundation for Children with Cancer, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A New Era In Holistic Care.
Children with cancer and their families in Cyprus.Therapeutic Entertainment.
A new, innovative program of the ELPIDA Foundation

My friends, treating a child with cancer is not just about the body.

It also concerns the soul.
It’s about the family.
It’s about quality of life.

A smile, a hug, a game, a shared experience or a few hours without fear can become part of the healing process.

With these thoughts, I share with you the successful conclusion of the first ELPIDA Therapeutic Weekend, which we organized on June 19–21, 2026.

Ten families of children with cancer and leukemia participated in a three-day event dedicated to psychological empowerment, rejuvenation, creating beautiful shared experiences and strengthening family ties.

The program was implemented by an excellent multidisciplinary team of professionals specializing in therapeutic entertainment, who created a safe, creative and supportive environment, where children and their families were able to express themselves, connect, smile and draw strength for the continuation of their difficult struggle.

The response of the families was particularly moving. The parents spoke to us about the love, care and acceptance they felt, about the psychological strength they drew and about the hope that was renewed within them, so that they could continue the difficult fight against cancer with greater endurance.

For me, this action also has a special personal significance.

In 1996 I had the honor to introduce for the first time in Cyprus the therapeutic entertainment program for children with cancer, as an integral part of the holistic care we developed in the Pediatric Oncology Services of our country.

Almost thirty years later, I watch with great emotion this philosophy evolve and take on a new, even more complete form, embracing not only the children but also their entire family.

I would like to express my warm thanks to EKO, whose generous and long-term support made it possible to implement this innovative program, as well as to ROBINSON Cyprus for its excellent hospitality and contribution to the success of this initiative.

This is just the beginning of a new chapter in the holistic care of children with cancer and their families in Cyprus.

When we take care of the child, we also take care of the family.

And when the family gets stronger, the child gets stronger too.

The photo captures a moment from this special Therapeutic Entertainment program.”
