Lisa Montel: What Technical Cooperation Looks Like at City Cancer Challenge

Lisa Montel, Technical Cooperation Manager at City Cancer Challenge, shared on LinkedIn:

“This is what technical cooperation looks like at City Cancer Challenge (C/Can)

First stop: Tbilisi, Georgia, with Natia Verdzadze. We delivered a training with the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health Georgia for 74 medical facilities. A direct follow up from the first cycle of implementation in Tbilisi, where we developed the national cancer registry SOPs with IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization. Why this training? Because it ensures medical facilities send quality data to the population-based cancer registry.

These numbers are telling us how many new cancer cases are diagnosed in the country, where, how they are diagnosed and treated, and who has died from the disease. These data inform cancer programmes and global studies, monitoring progress towards better access to quality cancer care. Thanks to our Georgian colleagues Lela Sulaberidze, Maia Kereselidze, Konstantine Kazanjan, Lika Maisuradze, and Liana Khuchua.

Second stop: Seoul, Republic of Korea. C/Can joined the annual WHO Palliative Care Global Action Forum together with 66 experts from more than 30 countries. It is staggering that only 12% of people who need palliative care globally actually receive it, with the vast majority of unmet needs in LMICs. Seeing these health inequities always saddens me, but also motivates me to continue the work we are doing in global health. Representing City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) in these events and showing that we are implementing concrete solutions, I felt part of a movement for health with justice.

It was such a pleasure to meet the World Health Organization Palliative Care Working Group and continue projects with our collaborators African Palliative Care Association, Eve Namisango, Oladayo A., Asociación Latinoamericana de Cuidados Paliativos (ALCP), Tania Pastrana, João Batista Santos Garcia, Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network, Cheong Leong Giam, Ghauri Aggarwal, the Ruth Foundation for Palliative and Hospice Care, Maricar Sabeniano and the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Dr N M Mujeeb Rahman, Libby Sallnow.”
