“Yesterday, the South Dakota House took an important step to protect access to care by stopping legislation that would have repealed voter – approved Medicaid expansion. This decision respects the voice of South Dakotans who supported expansion at the ballot and recognizes a simple truth: as health care costs rise, taking coverage away from nearly 30,000 people is not the answer.
Since Medicaid expansion took effect in 2023, South Dakota’s uninsured rate has declined, giving thousands of working individuals and families access to affordable, quality health coverage for the first time. That access is foundational, supporting early detection, better health outcomes, and a more stable health care system, particularly in rural communities.
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), working alongside a broad coalition of health care professionals and advocates, led efforts in South Dakota to increase access to the state’s Medicaid program and continues to urge lawmakers to protect it.
I’m encouraged to see lawmakers recognize the value of maintaining access to affordable, quality care and protecting a program that is making a real difference across the state.”
