”Goals of Care discussions are often not easy.
Really enjoyed hearing Joshua Jones share his thoughts with our residents at UC Irvine on this important topic.
A few important reminders from this lecture that stayed with me:
- Patients often cannot process complex medical information until their emotions are first acknowledged and validated.
- Delivering a clear and compassionate headline may be more important than giving a long medical explanation.
- Sometimes, we should ask ourselves: ‘will this treatment help this patient achieve what matters most to them?’
- Sometimes the most meaningful and compassionate care is recommending against another intervention.
Communication is a core clinical skill in Oncology.”
