Liam Ghiam: Goals of Care Discussions are Often Not Easy

Liam Ghiam, Clinical Associate in the UCI Health, Integrative and Functional Medicine Fellow at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, shared on LinkedIn:

Goals of Care discussions are often not easy.

Really enjoyed hearing Joshua Jones share his thoughts with our residents at UC Irvine on this important topic.

A few important reminders from this lecture that stayed with me:

  • Patients often cannot process complex medical information until their emotions are first acknowledged and validated.
  • Delivering a clear and compassionate headline may be more important than giving a long medical explanation.
  • Sometimes, we should ask ourselves: ‘will this treatment help this patient achieve what matters most to them?’
  • Sometimes the most meaningful and compassionate care is recommending against another intervention.

Communication is a core clinical skill in Oncology.”
