Liam Alireza Ghiam: Impact of Age, Marital Status, and Smoking on Post-Surgical Prostate Cancer Outcomes

Liam Alireza Ghiam, Clinical Associate in the UCI Health, Integrative and Functional Medicine Fellow at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What is the impact of Age, Marital Status, and Smoking on urinary and sexual function in patients with prostate cancer treated with surgery?

Bottom line (at 1 year): Sexual function remains lower for older men, unmarried men, and men who have ever smoked.

Urinary function
  • Older age predicts early incontinence, but most men do not have a persistent deficit at 1 year.
  • Married men tend to recover earlier, likely due to partner support and healthier habits.
Sexual function
  • Recovery is slower and often incomplete compared with urinary recovery.
  • Older age, smoking history, and being unmarried are linked to poorer sexual outcomes, possibly from baseline differences and vascular effects.
What to do?
  1. Start pelvic floor training before surgery.
  2. Stop smoking before surgery.
  3. Involve partners in recovery planning.

Recovery after prostate surgery is not just physical.

It is connected to lifestyle, emotional support, and overall health.”
