Laura Alder: Anyone With Lungs Can Get Lung Cancer

Laura Alder, Thoracic Medical Oncologist at Duke University School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:

“Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.

That message feels especially timely right now following Pope Leo’s cancer diagnosis. I was grateful to join WCNC to talk about why lung cancer screening matters and how early detection truly saves lives. When lung cancer is caught early, often through low-dose CT screening in those who qualify, it is far more treatable, and outcomes improve dramatically.

A few things I hope people take away

  • Lung cancer doesn’t discriminate. Anyone can be affected regardless of smoking history.
  • Screening works. For those who meet eligibility criteria, annual low-dose CT can find cancer before symptoms ever appear.
  • Early detection changes outcomes. The earlier we find it, the more options we have to treat it.

If you or someone you love may be at risk, talk to your doctor about whether lung cancer screening is right for you. It’s a conversation that could save a life.
