Lacy Hubbard: Another District in Rwanda Reaches the Cervical Cancer Screening Target

Lacy Hubbard, President and CEO of Elekta Foundation, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am so happy to report that another district in Rwanda has reached the target.

Kayonza District has now achieved 71% cervical cancer coverage, bringing World Health Organization -recommended HPV DNA testing to nearly 44,000 women.

Even more exciting is the 92% follow-up rate among women who tested HPV positive.

Testing is only the first step. Follow-up care and timely treatment are what prevent cervical cancer.

Every dark green district on the map represents a major milestone in Rwanda’s journey toward Eliminating Cervical Cancer. Today, Kayonza joins that group.

Many people contribute to this success, but today I would like to especially recognize Community Health Workers. They walk from village to village, go door to door, educate women about cervical cancer prevention, collect HPV samples, and help ensure that women who test HPV positive return for follow-up care and treatment when needed.

Their dedication, persistence, and deep connection to local communities have been instrumental in making achievements like this possible.

Next week, Rwamagana district is ready to kick off. Healthcare providers, data-entry teams, and Community Health Workers have all been trained and are eager to get started. I can’t wait to see what they are going to show us.

Mission 2027 is stronger than ever, and I am so proud that the Elekta Foundation is on this journey with Rwanda.

Just imagine a world where women no longer die from cervical cancer. With every district that reaches this milestone, that future comes a little closer.”
