Kenji López-Cuevas: Legislative Push for Alcohol Cancer Warning Labels

Kenji López-Cuevas, Founding President of Cancer Warriors of Mexico, Treasurer at Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday, at the Mexican Senate I participated in a press conference on a legislative initiative that seeks to include warning labels on alcoholic beverages about the proven risk of developing up to seven types of cancer.

I am grateful to Mexican Senator Alejandra Barrales Magdaleno and to legislators from different Parliamentary Groups who invited us, as civil society, to support this proposal. This initiative opens the door to a fundamental debate on public health in Mexico.

According to the International IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization, global cancer cases are projected to increase by 75% by 2050. In Mexico, this would mean moving from 570 daily diagnoses to more than 1,000 per day—an alarming scenario that calls for immediate preventive action.

As President of Founding President of Cancer Warriors of Mexico and Treasurer of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), I reaffirm our commitment to working hand in hand with legislators, federal and state authorities, medical and academic societies, civil society, and international organizations to build evidence-based public policies that protect health and save lives.”
