Kenji López-Cuevas, Founding President of Cancer Warriors of Mexico, Treasurer at Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“At the Senate of the Republic of Mexico.
This was the first of the official meetings we organized for Dr Elisabete Weiderpass, Director of the IARC of United Nations, based in Lyon, France.
We are deeply grateful for the support of our friend and ally, Senator Cynthia López Castro, who welcomed us also in her capacity as Global President of Women Parliamentarians at the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), headquartered in Geneva.
We also held a working session with Senator Jose Cruz, Chair of the Health Committee, where we discussed the benefits and strategic importance of Mexico joining the IARC as a Member State, to strengthen cancer control through research and high-quality data generation.
Later, we had the opportunity to enter the Plenary of the Mexican Senate, where we reaffirmed our collaboration with key allies such as Senator Lilia Margarita Valdez Martínez, Chair of the Governance Committee; Senator Imelda Castro Castro; Senator Verónica Camino Farjat; Senator Sandra Simey Olvera Bautista; and Senator Alejandra Barrales Magdaleno.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude —in my capacity as Treasurer of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)— to the Board of the Senate of the Republic for their public acknowledgment of Dr. Weiderpass. This symbolic gesture created new opportunities to advance her mission of strengthening international cooperation and supporting Mexico’s potential accession to IARC.
Stay tuned: our next update will highlight the official meetings with the Executive Branch.”
