Kefah Mokbel: Can Diet Influence Cancer Risk and Outcomes?

Kefah Mokbel, Chair of Breast Cancer Surgery at London Breast Institute and Honorary Professor of Medicine at Cardiff University School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Can diet influence cancer risk and outcomes?

A recently published meta-analysis in Frontiers in Oncology evaluated the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and cancer outcomes across 15 cohort studies.

The authors found that higher adherence to the EAT-Lancet dietary pattern was associated with lower overall cancer incidence and cancer mortality. The strongest site-specific association was observed for lung cancer, while no statistically significant reduction was demonstrated for breast cancer incidence.

The EAT-Lancet diet emphasizes:

  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes and nuts
  • Healthy unsaturated fats
  • Limited red and processed meat
  • Minimal ultra-processed foods and added sugars

Although observational data cannot establish causality, these findings add to the growing body of evidence supporting healthy dietary patterns as part of comprehensive cancer prevention strategies.

As breast cancer specialists, we should continue to encourage evidence-based lifestyle interventions alongside advances in screening, surgery, systemic therapy, and radiotherapy.”
