Kefah Mokbel: GLP-1 Drugs Show Promise in Breast Cancer

Kefah Mokbel, Chair of Breast Cancer Surgery at London Breast Institute and Honorary Professor of Medicine at Cardiff University School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:

GLP-1 Drugs Such as Mounjaro Show Promise in Breast Cancer: GLP-1 receptor agonists may have a role beyond weight loss and glycaemic control in breast cancer care.

A major new cohort study published in JAMA Network Open analysed data from 841,831 women with breast cancer and found that GLP-1 receptor agonist use was associated with significantly improved survival and lower recurrence rates in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Among patients with obesity, GLP-1 RA use was associated with:

  • 65% lower all-cause mortality
  • 56% lower recurrence risk

The findings add to the growing evidence linking metabolic health to breast cancer outcomes and support the urgent need for prospective randomised clinical trials evaluating GLP-1 receptor agonists in oncology. This could represent an important step toward integrating metabolic therapy into personalised breast cancer management.

Comments

  • These findings reinforce the growing link between metabolic health and breast cancer outcomes, while highlighting the urgent need for prospective randomised trials before GLP-1 RAs can be integrated into routine oncologic practice.
  • Although causality cannot be established from retrospective data, this large real-world study raises the possibility that GLP-1 receptor agonists may emerge as an important adjunct in personalised breast cancer care.
  • The study adds to emerging evidence that targeting metabolic dysfunction may influence breast cancer outcomes, opening an important avenue for future translational and clinical research.”
