Kefah Mokbel: The Link Between Occupational Radiation Exposure and Breast Cancer Among Female Physicians

Kefah Mokbel, Professor of Medicine (Honorary) at Cardiff University School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Breast Cancer Risk in Female Physicians Exposed to Ionizing Radiation is Increased by 84%

A new systematic review and meta-analysis (Cristófalo et al., Clin Breast Cancer, 2025) assessed the link between occupational radiation exposure and breast cancer among female physicians (orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, urologists, cardiologists, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons).

Findings (6 studies, 34,744 participants):

  • Increased breast cancer risk (84%) in radiation-exposed physicians: OR 1.84 (95% CI 1.11–3.06)
  • Sensitivity analysis (high-quality studies only): OR 1.42 (95% CI 1.06–1.89)
  • Majority of included studies rated high quality.

Implications:
Female physicians with long-term occupational exposure to ionizing radiation face a significantly elevated risk of breast cancer. Strengthened radiation safety protocols, protective measures, and long-term surveillance programs are essential to mitigate risk.”
