Katie Coleman: A Patient-Centered Platform for Vetted Cancer Resources

Katie Coleman, Founder at OncoLogic Solutions, shared a post on X:

“Earlier this year when misinformation was running rampant on social media and targeting those impacted by cancer, I needed an outlet to point my frustrations at.

So I buried myself in code to build a platform with vetted resources for patients, from there Contexlia was born, a platform that sources vetted resources from nonprofits and experts in the space with AI-powered search functionality. It since has morphed into so much more and it’s finally ready for release after its initial BETA, so keep scrolling below for a mega thread of its features.

Kicking off with one of my favorites which is using natural language to ask questions to the chat which will jump you to timestamps in webinars or videos where that question has been answered.

The platform allows users to search for resources, create and share collections, and has built in functionality for distress ratings so patients can give each other a heads up for any difficult or distressing content they encounter.

This feature was informed by my own spirals over OS stats early in my diagnosis. Something many other patients struggle with as well. Connecting with other patients is what brought me out of those spirals, so the AI responses are also encouraged to find a related patient story/blog to share with any answers when applicable to help empower patients with both knowledge and hope.

It has a built in clinical trial finder that allows users to search for and add trials to a personal collection which is private to them. That collection can then be exported to a pdf for patients to bring to their doctors with questions or copied to your favorite LLM to gather additional context.

The PubMed search works in a very similar way. Allowing users to search the latest PubMed articles, add them to collections then annotate with notes, links, and additional context you may want to return to. I personally often create AI podcasts via NotebookLM and link it to the paper so I have quick access if I want to listen before I dive in.

Any user with an account can make and share resource collections. They can also search public collections such content on biopsies or small renal masses for example.

You can browse events from each of the nonprofits in a disease space or search for major conferences. All sources link back directly to the foundations and their original content, which we strongly encourage users to support and visit. These foundations do an incredible job creating resources for the community and this platform is meant to support not replace their tools.

And lastly, there’s even a social media section to help direct patients toward credible resources on the platforms where they spend their time. Any medical professionals in kidney cancer that feel comfortable having their social media listed here, please reach out so I can add you!

This platform started as a place to collect vetted resources for kidney cancer but has morphed into a platform that can support any disease type and even personal use. It has replaced notion for me and I use it for everything from finding clinical trials and sharing resources to managing my nonprofit’s content calendar and planning podcasts.

One of the biggest questions for a platform like this is ‘who maintains it and who decides what vetted means?’ Right now, that answer is me. My process for what qualifies as a vetted resource is one that is created by one of the nonprofits in the space or content from any of the major associations.

While I would love one day to actually to pay patient advocates to help source this content, the platform currently doesn’t have funding, so I am self-hosting. I certainly welcome any volunteers who’d like to help source or add resources as well. I have AI tooling that supports quick imports and updates. I built and maintain this for the community, so I welcome any feedback and shares. The free tier should cover most uses and paid tiers help offset the AI costs incurred.

You can check Contexlia out here.”
