Kathy Baker: Former NFL Player Tony Savage about His Battle with Breast Cancer and BRCA2 Mutation

Kathy Baker, Founder and Executive Director at My Faulty Gene, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Tony Savage shared about his breast cancer diagnosis and BRCA2 mutation in a conversation with Rome Madison – this year’s host of My Faulty Gene’s annual hereditary cancer dinner in Tyler, Texas on Thursday, October 2nd.

This former defensive tackle for Washington State and the San Diego Chargers talked about how the discipline he learned as an athlete helped him face an unexpected Stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis that required a mastectomy, chemo and radiation.

Tony’s words were timely, as our dinner fell during both National Hereditary Cancer Week and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While in treatment, Tony tested positive for a BRCA2 gene mutation – something that put him at increased risk of breast and other cancers.

We appreciate Tony’s willingness to share his very private story publicly in order to encourage men everywhere to be proactive in their healthcare and to consider genetic testing if other family members have a known hereditary mutation or if there is a family history of cancer.

Knowledge is power!

Be watching for more of Tony’s story as part of My Faulty Gene’s video series – a collection of powerful short videos of individuals impacted by hereditary cancers filmed by John Brune, a 3-time Emmy Award-winning videographer.”
