Kashyap Patel: A 1988 Vision of Artificial Intelligence Becoming Reality

Kashyap Patel, Medical Director and Consultant at Blue Cross Blue Shields of South Carolina, Past President at Community Oncology Alliance, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“In 1988 (nearly 4 decades ago), I authored an article for a leading vernacular newspaper in Bombay, a division of the Indian Express, during my fellowship training in Hematology Oncology at KEM Hospital (I was working as a part time journalist and also had my own weekly column). The article, titled “Now Computers Will Create Artificial Intelligence with Superfast Speed to Replace Human Intelligence in the Next Few Decades,” highlighted my early observations on the potential of computers and AI.

At a time when many were still unfamiliar with computers, I foresaw that within the next 3-4 decades, AI would begin to replace numerous human tasks through the power of superfast computing. While I do not claim to possess the foresight of Nostradamus, I believe that viewing the universe from an ecosystem perspective allows us to gain clarity on evolutionary trends and the symbiosis of technology and humanity.

The article covers several key points:

  •  The development of computers and AI for healthcare, warfare and defense mechanisms, showcasing advancements in technology.
  •  The establishment of workshops focused on creating AI systems capable of autonomous decision-making and task execution.
  •  The implementation and testing of these computer systems in specific locations and facilities.

Reflecting on this early insight, it is fascinating to witness how far we have come in the realm of technology and its implications for the future.”
