Karen Canfell, Lead of The Cancer Elimination Collaboration (CEC), Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney, shared on LinkedIn:
”Our study on the number of people in Australia living after a cancer diagnosis is out this week.
Currently, we estimate that over 1.6 million people are living with or after cancer, and nothing changes this is going to grow by nearly 1 million people, to 2.6 million in 2050. There will also be a huge increase in the number of older people living after cancer.
These estimates provide the basis for comprehensive cancer planning for treatment, survivorship and palliative care demand in the coming decades.
They also prompt ongoing consideration of the needed investments in prevention and early detection which could substantially change this picture.
Many congratulations to Qingwei Luo, lead author, for another impactful paper – it has been wonderful to work with you on this program for many years.
Also special thanks to Michael Jefford – it has been great working with you on this, to have your clinical and survivorship expertise help shape the interpretation.
And thanks to all the other authors – David Smith, Michael David, Eleonora Feletto, Clare Kahn and Julia Steinberg.”
