Karen Canfell: Honored to Receive the 2026 Charles A. LeMaistre Award

Karen Canfell, Lead of Cancer Elimination Collaboration (CEC) at the University of Sydney, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I was recently very honored to receive the 2026 Charles A. LeMaistre Award in Oncology and Cancer Prevention from UT MD Anderson – The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre.

The late Charles LeMaistre was an incredibly inspiring figure in cancer prevention – he served as a key committee member for the first, 1964 US Surgeon-General’s report on smoking and health, and was subsequently President of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 1978 to 1996. I was also excited to meet Andi LeMaistre during the visit.

Past awardees include some of the scientists I most admire – Graham Colditz, Otis Brawley and Timothy Rebbeck.

It was an honor to deliver a lecture on the global journey towards cervical cancer elimination, and to spend time during the week with the incredible staff in the Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Science.

Thank-you to Ernest Hawkes, Vice-President and Head of the Division, and all Faculty and team members including Sanjay Shete, Mariana Chavaz Mac Gregor, Paul A Scheet, Jane Montealegre, Sharon Giordano, Elizabeth Chiao, Ruth Rechis and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas
(CPRIT) team, Qian Lu and many others. And thank-you to the lovely Shari Taylor and Sandra Devaraj who made all the arrangements!

We all had so much to discuss across many cancer control and prevention topics!

It was also wonderful, during the same trip, for Prof Marion Saville and myself to spend time with MD Anderson’s Global Oncology Team led by the amazing Kathleen Schmeler, with the Rice University Rice360 Institute for Global Health Technologies team led by Rebecca Richards-Kortum and to catch up with an old friend David Sholl.
