Karen Canfell: Great Discussions About the EPICC Research Synergies at IARC 60

Karen Canfell, Lead of Cancer Elimination Collaboration (CEC) at the University of Sydney, shared CEC’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

“Thanks so much to all involved, especially the wonderful Isabelle Soerjomataram!

Great discussions about the EPICC research synergies at IARC 60.

Quoting CEC’s post:

The Elimination Partnership in Cervical Cancer EPICC was on full display last week at the 60th anniversary conference of IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization IARC60 in Lyon, France.

Across the conference, EPICC showcased the power of collaboration, innovation, and country-led action to accelerate progress toward cervical cancer elimination globally.”

At the EPICC booth, delegates explored:

  • Live demonstrations of the canSCREEN digital health cervical cancer screening registry
  • The Cervical Cancer Elimination Planning Tool (EPT) hosted on the IARC GLOBOCAN website
  • Demonstrations of point-of-care HPV self-collection testing models

The EPICC panel discussion, expertly moderated by Isabelle Soerjomataram, brought together leaders across government, academia, clinical care, financing, and implementation to discuss the future of cervical cancer elimination.

Panelists included:

  • Dorothy Keefe, CEO of Cancer Australia, who highlighted Australia’s leadership in HPV vaccination, HPV-based screening, universal self-collection, and its national strategy for cervical cancer elimination. Discussions also explored how Australia’s domestic success is informing its international development partnerships through EPICC.
  • Kathleen Schmeler from UT MD Anderson who spoke about the importance of sustainable country-led programs, strengthening cancer treatment and palliative care services, and how investments in cervical cancer elimination can strengthen broader health systems.
  • Joanne Manrique from The Women’s Health Empowerment Network (WHEN), who discussed innovative financing mechanisms and the role of blended finance, technology transfer, and private sector partnerships in supporting sustainable cervical cancer elimination efforts across the Indo-Pacific.
  • Karen Canfell AC FAHMS, who highlighted the critical role of affordable, high-quality HPV diagnostics, the importance of building cancer control capacity in LMIC settings, and the ongoing collaborations between IARC and the CEC to support coordinated global elimination efforts.

Following the session, panelists had the opportunity to meet with His Excellency Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of Health of Indonesia to discuss Indonesia’s vision for cervical cancer elimination at scale.

A huge thank you to all collaborators, partners, and participants who continue driving this global movement forward. The momentum toward cervical cancer elimination continues to grow.”
