Karan Sood: What Started as an Opportunity to Contribute Has Become a Lesson in Leadership

Karan Sood, Assistant Professor at Tata Memorial Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:

“Being part of the YMO Young Leader ecosystem has been one of the more formative parts of my professional growth in oncology.

What started as an opportunity to contribute has gradually become a lesson in leadership, collaboration and responsibility.

The next phase of progress will not come only from large academic centers. It will also come from younger oncologists across cities and institutions who are building communities, improving access to education.

Creating research networks, and making evidence more relevant to everyday Indian practice is central to this leadership.

This is also where the pathway differs from organizations such as ASCO and ESMO, where leadership development is often highly structured through formal committees, mentorship pathways, fellowships, task forces, and global professional networks.

The Indian model is still evolving, but in many ways it is more entrepreneurial:

‘You often learn leadership by building the platform while standing on it.’

I am grateful for the people, mentors, colleagues, and fellow young oncologists who have helped me grow through this role.

More importantly, I am excited by what this generation can build for Indian oncology over the next decade.”
