Kamal Saini: 25-Year Analysis of Oncology Drug Development in the UK

Kamal Saini, Global Head, Oncology Therapeutic Expertise at Fortrea, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Our analysis of 25 years of oncology drug development in the UK, published recently in the British Journal of Cancer, examines trends in interventional cancer clinical trials from 2000 to 2025 and comparing the UK landscape with the EU, United States, and China.

  • The UK Clinical Trials Regulation 2026 reforms present a significant opportunity to enhance the UK’s attractiveness as a destination for oncology drug development and early-phase research.
  • Strong growth in UK oncology trials through 2017, followed by significant challenges associated with Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic, with encouraging signs of recovery thereafter.
  • Increasing global competition, particularly from China.
  • Continued strengths within the UK ecosystem, including its scientific expertise, clinical research infrastructure, and capacity to deliver innovative cancer studies.

Cancer patients depend on efficient, high-quality clinical research to accelerate access to innovative therapies.

Strengthening the regulatory environment while maintaining rigorous standards will be critical to ensuring that the UK remains a global leader in oncology innovation.

Many thanks to my co-authors and collaborators across academia, industry, and healthcare whose expertise made this work possible.”
