“When the U.S. launched the ‘war on cancer’ in the 1970s, five-year survival was 49%. Today that number is 70%.
This progress – measured in the lives of millions of cancer survivors – is the product of decades of sustained investment in cancer research. That investment has empowered generations of oncologists and researchers working in labs and clinics across the country to continually drive new discoveries that advance cancer care.
Throughout my career, I’ve seen what these investments have meant to patients and families facing a cancer diagnosis: more time, more options, more hope. But our work is far from finished.
Today, even patients with access to the best prevention, diagnosis, and treatment still die of cancer. Continued investment through the NIH and NCI is essential to accelerate progress for patients still waiting for the next breakthrough.
