“Most people in the ImpSci space know about the ERIC list of implementation strategies. But not as many people seem to know about the EPOC taxonomy.
If you don’t know, the Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) list provides a list of 73 implementation strategies, grouped into clusters. It includes a lot of different kinds of strategies (individual, organizational, and throws in some things that many people consider part of the implementation process, rather than actual implementation strategies).
The EPOC Taxonomy was developed by Cochrane’s Effective Practice and Organisation of Care group (which unfortunately has now lost funding). It approaches strategies a little differently and groups them into four domains:
- Delivery arrangements
- Financial arrangements
- Governance arrangements
- Implementation strategies
That means the EPOC taxonomy includes things like insurance schemes, financial incentives, decentralization, and workforce policy.
Because so many of us are working on organization and system-level change initiatives, having these types of strategies in the list is super helpful, and we use a combination of ERIC + EPOC strategies in all of our lists of implementation strategies.
Although a lot of the website is now unavailable, the EPOC Taxonomy is still available if you want to look through (or download it, in case it disappears).
