Celia Diez de los Rios: Journal Club Reflection on Patient Engagement
Celia Diez de los Rios, Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Tracy McQuire et al. published in Research Involvement and Engagement:
“Journal Club Reflection on patient engagement: now about conferences
This time, inspired by this article, I got a recommendation in my inbox (not cancer-related, but thanks, Google!): ‘Partnering for Impact: Best Practices for Planning In-Person Academic Events with Patient Partners’.
Whereas with PPI on research, they suggest involving patient partners from the very beginning – designing the agenda, shaping themes, and deciding content together with reminders. I have only seen this at PEOF
I liked the idea of name tags with no affiliation (not only for patients!) Some of us have struggled with this, too.
They also reflected on how they have grown over the years. To remind us that we can improve step by step.
From my own experience (from ESMO, EONS, and the amazing PEOF event), I’ve seen how powerful it is when patients really are partners, not participants. Patients are experts on their own journey. If we stay by listening, including them, and truly share power, we will help to improve.
I have so much to learn.”
