For years, our industry has focused on reimbursement reform, particularly ROCR, as the solution to our financial challenges. But what if we’ve been asking the wrong question?
This article argues that changing how Medicare pays does not change what it costs to deliver cancer care. Rising labor costs, capital investments, workforce shortages, prior authorization, technology, and administrative complexity – not payment methodology – are the true drivers of financial instability.
More importantly, CMS is signaling a broader transformation centered on total cost of care, operational efficiency, site-neutral payment, AI governance, and value-based care. Organizations that continue focusing only on reimbursement risk missing the much larger shift underway.
