Joanna Metzner-Sadurski: Improving Clinical Trial Access Through Health Literacy and Patient Support

Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, Member of the Board of Advisors at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and President of Oncology101.org, shared on LinkedIn:

“Table Talk: The Trial is There. The Patient is There. So Why Aren’t They Finding Each other

Grateful to Association of Cancer Care Centers for organizing a Table Talk on clinical trials and the practical challenges that shape patient access.

Clinical trials are essential to advancing cancer care. We need to keep having conversations about the details that make participation possible:

  • How do we ensure a biopsy provides enough tissue for the necessary testing?
  • How do we extract and use clinical data to match patients with appropriate trials?
  • When we identify an eligible patient, how do we help them get there – addressing transportation, costs, and caregiver needs
  • How do we explain clinical trials clearly so patients understand their options and become active partners in decisions?
  • How do we address medical mistrust through listening, transparency, and respect?

Patients deserve the time, information, and support to make an informed choice. Their questions and experiences belong at the center of these conversation. Grateful fo work with Ruiling Yuan, who is as passionate about Health Literacy and Acces to Care as I am.”
