Joanna Metzner-Sadurski: How the TeleOncology Hub is Transforming Equitable Cancer Care in Nigeria

Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, Medical Doctor at Self Regional Healthcare and Executive Director of Oncology101.org, shared on LinkedIn:

“Innovation in cancer care isn’t always about the newest drug. Sometimes it’s about making sure a patient can reach an oncologist without traveling hundreds of kilometers.

In just over one year, Cancer Consciousness Initiative TeleOncology Hub has transformed from a pilot at Federal Medical Centre Jalingo into a regional model for equitable cancer care across six states in Northeastern Nigeria. Through telemedicine, multidisciplinary collaboration, patient navigation, and community partnerships, the program has connected more than 300 patients with specialist oncology care, reduced travel burdens, improved access to guideline-concordant treatment, and brought hope to communities where cancer care was once out of reach.

What makes this initiative truly inspiring is that it goes beyond technology. It is strengthening health systems, empowering primary care providers, supporting patients throughout their cancer journey, and now expanding health literacy by collaborating with #Oncology101.org to develop NIH plain-language educational videos in local dialects.

Congratulations to Dr. Hannatu Ayuba and the entire Cancer Consciousness Initiative team on this extraordinary achievement and the well-deserved international recognition, including the 2026 Yvonne Award for Community Oncology presented at the ASCO Annual Meeting 2026.

This is a powerful reminder that innovation is measured not only by scientific discovery, but by how many lives we can reach, how many barriers we can remove, and how many patients we can bring closer to quality cancer care.

The future of oncology is collaborative, connected, and patient-centered-and TeleOncology Hub is helping lead the way.

As Julie Gralow said:

By combining our resources, we can do more to achieve our shared goal of improving cancer care around the world.”
