“Supporting caregivers is one of the most important-and often overlooked-aspects of cancer care.
As highlighted in this SIOG – International Society of Geriatric Oncology publication, caregivers of older adults with cancer face tremendous emotional, physical, and logistical challenges.
While physicians, nurses, social workers, navigators, and therapists are essential members of the care team, innovative supportive care models such as oncology doulas may provide an additional layer of guidance and support for patients and families. We are excited to be a site with a pilot oncology doula program at Self Regional Healthcare, reflecting Matthew Logan, vision of providing the best and compassionate care possible for our patients and their loved ones.
The themes of patient-centered care, health literacy, and shared decision-making remain central to oncology. Oncology101.org, developed patient-friendly educational resource – a video focused on the role of oncology doulas and how they may help
As our population ages and cancer care becomes increasingly complex, supporting caregivers is not optional-‘it is essential.
Thank you to SIOG for continuing to shine a light on this important aspect of geriatric oncology.”

Supporting caregivers of older adults with cancer
Caregivers play a central role in managing care for older adults with cancer. But how are their abilities assessed in clinical practice?
This qualitative study explores healthcare professionals’ perspectives on evaluating caregiver capacity. Assessments were often informal, based on interactions or direct questions, with no consistent or systematic approach.
The findings highlight the need for structured methods to assess caregiver abilities and better integrate them into care planning.
