Joanna Metzner-Sadurski: A Second Chance Thanks to Immunotherapy

Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, Medical Doctor at Self Regional Healthcare and Executive Director of Oncology101.org, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Second chance. Lung cancer. Immunotherapy. ASCO advocacy. NIH.

Five years ago, I met a 38-year-old woman with lung cancer that had already spread to her brain. Her life was unraveling. Walking was difficult. Her personal life was in turmoil. She had struggled with addiction and was estranged from her family.

Her mother came with her to the visit.

We made a plan. Radiation. Next-generation sequencing. Very high PD-L1 expression. Immunotherapy. She responded.

Today, five years later, she has no evidence of cancer. She went back to school, now works as a hairdresser, and has rebuilt relationships with her children, her mother, and her life. She wanted me to share her story….

Medicine sometimes gives people a second chance.

Many of the patients alive today are here because of immunotherapy -and immunotherapy exists because of decades of NIH-supported research. Research saves lives.

Support science. Support the NIH. Support ASCO Adavocat. Support the future of cancer care. Ruiling Yuan involved in lung cancer screening initiative.”
