Joanna Metzner-Sadurski: ASCO Community of Practice Highlights – Connection, Policy, and Purpose

Joanna Metzner-Sadurski, Medical Doctor at Self Regional Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“ASCO Community of Practice Highlights – Connection, Policy, and Purpose

Incredible discussions this week from leaders across our ASCO Community of Practice.

Emily Touloukian, DO shared how social media can strengthen community oncology – keeping teams connected across the country, celebrating staff through initiatives like Spotlight Saturday and Daisy Awards, and even supporting patient engagement.

Dr. Balasky reminded us how important it is to fight for efficient, patient-centered care delivery and to remove unnecessary barriers that frustrate both patients and physicians. Dr. Abi Siva called attention to the urgent need to invest in fellows and research infrastructure so the next generation of academic oncologists isn’t lost.

Dr. Ray Page spoke powerfully about advocacy – from ASCO policy work to the impact of the 340B program – underscoring how policy directly affects access and sustainability in community practices.
Dr. Yüksel Ürün, joining from Turkey, reflected on the global reach of ASCO and NCCN guidelines and how international collaboration uplifts care everywhere.

We also discussed AI policy – the need for continuous, equitable, real-world validation of technology, not just one-time testing before approval.

And maybe the most important reminder of all: Get involved early. Start with your state oncology society. That’s where relationships form, advocacy begins, and leadership grows.

A huge thank you to Jasmine Kamboj, Ruiling Yuan,Wade Swenson, and all the incredible leaders and volunteers of ASCOCoP for organizing this inspiring webinar. Your leadership and energy keep this community connected and forward-looking.

Oncology is global – but change starts local.”
