“New statistics from the American Cancer Society show that nearly 70% of people diagnosed with cancer now live five years or longer.
Death rates continue to fall due to better treatments, prevention, and earlier detection. Those are statistics worth celebrating.
But advances in survival have not equated to advances in quality of life or better long-term health for cancer survivors.
Many survivors live for years (or decades) with persistent symptoms, late effects of treatment, and limited guidance once routine oncology follow-up tapers.
In a new essay, I reflect on what today’s survival statistics reveal about the growing need to rethink how we support people living after cancer.
