Jeff Hunnicutt, Chief Executive Officer at Highlands Oncology Group, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As oncology becomes more complex operationally, the ability to lead people, communicate clearly, and build healthy teams is becoming just as important as clinical expertise.
The future of cancer care is going to depend on both, so I’m thankful for the MD leaders at Highlands Oncology Group dedicating the time and attention needed to build these skills with our young physicians.
My friend and COO, Olalekan Ajayi PharmD MBA FACCC, wrote a really good piece on something that does not get talked about enough in oncology training: leadership.
Most oncologists spend years becoming exceptional clinically, but very little time is spent teaching communication, operations, team leadership, or how to navigate the realities of modern cancer care delivery. The result is that many physicians are asked to lead teams and organizations without ever being formally prepared for that part of the job.”
