Jarno Drost: To Understand How Childhood Cancer Develops, We Need to Understand the Normal One

Jarno Drost, Professor at the Princess Máxima Center, Oncode Institute, and Utrecht University, shared Prinses Máxima Centrum’s post on LinkedIn, adding:

“I am honored and deeply grateful to accept the chair ‘Models and Mechanisms of Tumorigenesis in Pediatric Solid Tumors.’ In my inaugural lecture, ‘Disrupted Development: From Insight to Impact,’ I explained why it is so important to understand how pediatric cancer arises, and how these insights can ultimately improve outcomes for children with cancer.

Many thanks to Prinses Máxima Centrum voor kinderoncologie, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Utrecht University), my colleagues, family, and friends, and last but certainly not least, the patients and parents who contribute to and inspire our work.”

Quoting Prinses Máxima Centrum’s post:

“This week, prof. Jarno Drost delivered his inaugural lecture as Professor of Models and mechanisms of tumorigenesis in pediatric solid tumors at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Utrecht University.

The title of his lecture, ‘Development Gone Off Track: From Insight to Impact,’ captures the essence of his research. Unlike cancer in adults, many forms of childhood cancer are not driven by genetic chaos. They often arise from disrupted embryonic development.

Jarno says:

To understand how childhood cancer develops, we first need a thorough understanding of normal development. That fundamental insight is essential to ultimately make real impact for children with cancer, for example by identifying new targets for therapy.

Congratulations, Jarno!”
