“Africa and the Americas share many public health priorities – and there is significant potential for our regions to learn from, support, and strengthen one another.
During UNGA81 in New York, I met with Prof. Mohamed Janabi, World Health Organization African Region’s Regional Director, to build on the collaboration between the Pan American Health Organization and WHO AFRO and explore opportunities for a more structured South-South cooperation agenda between our regions.
Our discussion highlighted several areas where closer collaboration can add value: primary health care, health emergency preparedness and response, digital health and transformation, climate and health, health workforce development and retention, local production, and sustainable health financing.
Health emergencies already provide a strong foundation for joint work. Looking ahead, we can build on this experience to strengthen the exchange of knowledge, innovations and practical solutions, while also deepening coordination with Africa CDC and recognizing the distinct roles and mandates of our institutions.
Stronger cooperation between Africa and the Americas can help us share experience, build capacities and advance common public health priorities – with a focus on solutions that are locally driven, sustainable and responsive to the needs of our populations.”
