“Back at ASCO26 in Chicago, still the world’s largest cancer conference.
It’s always thrilling to spend a few days on latest advances in cancer science, hearing about practice-changing clinical data, and meeting passionate people from the US and around the world. Again, nearly 45,000 attendees have come together for more than 200 scientific and educational sessions, all focused on improving cancer outcomes.
What strikes me every year is that behind every session, every data point, and every scientific breakthrough are people affected cancer. This is not just numbers, or a new innovation, or an amazing clinical trial, this is about life and death for so many. The real challenge, and opportunity, is ensuring that advances in science translate into better experiences, better decisions, and better outcomes in the real world. And patient engagement should be at the core to shape them to what really counts – which is still the exception. However I can see progress, as e.g. in an ASCO roundtable of the Rising Tide Foundation for Clinical Cancer Research with advocates like me from Europe and the US where we were discussing requirements of effective patient involvement in early-phase clinical trials.
Great to be here with Danika Sharek, Rachel Giles, and Ananda Plate, engaging in those discussions, strengthening patient engagement, learning from cancer professionals, and connecting with patient advocates, clinicians and industry people, and innovators from around the world who are working hard to move the needle.”
