Nature has reported on a network of sham scientific societies that list prominent researchers as members or leaders, sometimes without consent, to look legitimate. They then sell memberships, awards, and virtual degrees to early – career scientists. Dozens of universities issued press releases celebrating these honours.

A timely reminder for all of us in academic medicine: verify before announcing, and help our trainees tell real recognition from the paid kind.”
